C3ER Team Visited Shariatpur District

A survey team from Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) visited Dular Char, Charbagha union, Bhedarganj upazila in Shariatpur district with a view to  conduct qualitative field survey for the project Floating Houses: Community Based Flood Resilience Innovations in Bangladesh. The ten days expedition (from 7-17 November 2017) comprised of nine members from C3ER. The team conducted three Key Informatnt Interviews (KIIs) and twenty Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Key informants were Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Project Implementation Officer (PIO) of Bhedarganj upazila; and Union Assistant Secretary (UAS) of Charbagha union. After initial discussion with the key informants and local representatives of Dular Char, it was convinced that Ward 05 would be the area to administer FGDs and future intervention. The team at first marked the territory of ward 05 followed by transact mapping with GPS location and household information. Counted on data and information from FGDs with local community, the team developed wealth ranking and habitat mapping, resource mapping, hazard calendar, disaster’s impact on morbidity and mortality, damage to housing, psycho-social impact of disaster, and impact of disaster on livelihood. Apart from this, there were 2 architects in the team to collect information on spatial distribution, house building materials, tools and technical variations of house, housing patterns, land use, land morphology, household setting, sanitation, and kitchen management. The architects explored the rehabilitation and reconstruction of housing during and after disasters to understand the community’s lifestyle, availability of housing materials and technological resources for the construction phase of the floating houses. This information will be helpful to understand their daily lifestyle that will help us to comprehend the utilization, interior and exterior space relationship and construction process of the demo house with the materials available at the site.
