The viva-voce examination for the presentation was chaired by Professor Dr. A. F. M. Yusuf Haider and attended by Professor Aparna Islam and Ms. Romana Siddique.

Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences organized a seminar talk on “Modelling of world’s first complete plant defense protein PRR Xa21 using bioinformatics technique”. M H M Mubassir, lecturer of MNS department, BRACU was the keynote speaker of that talk. Professor Ansar Ahmed, Ph.D., honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dr. Mohamed Foysol Chowdhury, director, research and development, BRACU were present as guest in the seminar. Professor Dr. A F M Yusuf Haider, chairperson of MNS department chaired the seminar.

The seminar was held on 26th October 2017 at UB21511 of MNS department at 2:00 PM with the introductory speech by Professor Dr. Ansar Ahmed. After one hour seminar talk Mr. Mubassir answered different questions asked by the audience. Faculties, staffs and students from different departments were present in the seminar. Professor Dr. A F M Yusuf Haider said that from now on, departmental seminars will be held on every fourth Thursday of each month at 2:00 pm. Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D., honorable Vice Chancellor appreciated this decision of regular seminar talk.

On October 26, 2017, a workshop was organized by the Professional Development Team (PDT) for the faculty members of BRAC Institute of Languages (BIL). The workshop was conducted by Mr. Md. Abdullah-Al Mamun, the title of which was “Utilizing the First Ten Minutes of Class Effectively”. The theme of the workshop was on class management and focused on an in-depth discussion on common challenges of classroom management and different useful techniques to overcome those challenges.

The workshop provided a platform to the faculty members to share different innovative ways to utilize the class time effectively to make the class a successful one. Overall, it was an interactive workshop where faculty members shared their thoughts and experiences.

Professor Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, C3ER, BRAC University attended a seminar as a Guest of Honor on “Application Tools and Techniques in Water Resources Management-CEGIS Experience”, organized by Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) held on 26 October 2017 at International Convention City Basundhara (ICCB). CEGIS is a centre of excellence situated in Dhaka, the Capital City of Bangladesh which is located in South Asia. The working domain of CEGIS span over Resource Management Planning (Natural and Intellectual), System Development, Capacity Building and Research activities.

Dr. Zafar Ahmed Khan, Senior Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh graced the seminar as the Chief Guest and Engr. Md. Mahfuzur Rahman, Director general, Bangladesh Water Development Board was presented as a Special Guest in the occasion.

Dr.  Samar Verma, Senior Programme Specialist of International Development Research Centre (IDRC) visited BIGD, BRAC University on 25 October, 2017. Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman welcomed him at BIGD and discussed vision, mission, objectives, targeted outputs and utilization of funds in Phase II. He also expressed sincere appreciation to IDRC for the grant provided to BIGD over last three years (under the Think Tank Initiative (TTI) phase II) which has enabled so many of the accomplishments including two annual flagship publications of BIGD to be sustained by the IDRC grant. BIGD is receiving core funding from TTI as one of the two think tanks in Bangladesh.

Later, Dr. Verma participated in a number of meetings with Research team, Communications team and Finance, Administration, IT & HR team. Different teams made separate presentations on the responsibilities, activities, the ways of works, achievements, and the targets/plans of each team to be achieved in 2018 and further on.

A Training on Pedagogy was held on 25 and 26 October 2017, at BRAC University jointly organized by Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Professional Development Centre (PDC) of BRAC University. Experts in the field of teaching strategy, assessment and research along with approximately seventy BRACU faculty participated in the two-day program. Professor Syed Saad Andaleeb, Ph.D., Vice Chancellor of BRAC University presented an inspiring talk on the need to make active learning as a mainstay in teaching practice at BRAC University. Pointing at his research findings, he drew a positive link between teacher  engagement in classroom and active learning. He asked the teachers to be more empathetic to the students. He also expressed his hope that BRAC University will continue its rise as a world class university as it was evident in making its place among the top 400 universities in QS ranking of Asian universities. Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Professor Emeritus, BRAC University spoke on the importance of building a student centered Teaching philosophy  in a teacher’s portfolio. He argued that the teacher portfolio is an integral part of teaching  practice, a reflective exercise of teacher's own professional development. Dr. Ahsan, Director, PDC gave the welcome speech as well as presented on ways to reach to digital natives. He also conducted an activity on effective course design. On the second day of the training, Dr. Ansar Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, BRAC University spoke emphatically on engaging students in the classroom by making learning an  interesting. He asked faculty to be creative in the way they can reach students meaningfully. Dr. Mohamed Foysol Chowdhury, Director, R&D, presented a passionate case why BRAC University should focus on faculty research to influence the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers. Dr. Siddiqur  Rahman, Professor and Former Director, IER, Dhaka University took an informative session on effective assessment strategies, by explaining why we must measure learning goals. Finally Professor Nazmul  Haq, IER took the concluding session on experiential learning and how to write research proposals. Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed, Director of BRAC Institute of Languages and Prof. Md. Tafazzal Hussain, Ph.D., Director of IQAC also attended the program which was superbly facilitated by PDC team members, Shaheen Akter, Shireen Akhter, Muhammad Foysal  Mubarak and Hamim Al Ahsan.

Publication

An article titled “Bangladesher Orthoniti Kototuku Egulo” was published in the daily newspaper Nayadigonto on 26 October, 2017. The article reviewed the GDP growth performance of Bangladesh over time as well as in comparison with other neighboring Asian countries. It highlighted the challenges to further acceleration arising from constraints to investment, and low level of skill of the work force. It suggested policy actions needed to address these constraints.

02 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam was the only discussant in a TV program broadcast by Channel 24. The subject matter of the discussion was the economic implications of the completion of the Padma Bridge with a particular focus on economic growth and poverty alleviation.

03 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam participated in a TV program broadcast by News 24. The other participant was Mr. Helal Uddin, Commissioner, Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission. The discussions dealt with the present state of capital market in Bangladesh, role of investor education, directions of regulatory reforms and oversight of financial statements of the listed companies to invigorate the capital market.

05 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam was only discussant in talk-show broadcast by Jamuna TV. The subject matter of discussions was the $4.5 billion credit agreement with India—its justification from the point of view of augmenting foreign exchange supply, terms and conditions of the agreement and their implications for the macro economy of Bangladesh.

16 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam chaired a round table discussion on “Regulatory Unpredictability in Bangladesh” where Mr. Md. Shahidul Haque, Senior Secretary, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division was the Chief Guest. Key-note paper was presented by Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Executive Director, Policy Research Institute. The designated discussants were Mr. M. Masrur Reaz, Senior Economist & Program Manager, Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice, World Bank Group, Syed Akhter Mahmood, Lead Private Sector Specialist, Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice, World Bank Group, Mr. Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury, Former Commerce Secretary and Mr. Asif Ibrahim, Former President, Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The other participants included Dr. Zaidi Sattar, Chairman, Policy Research Institute and Senior Economists from CPD& BIDS as well as some eminent business representatives. The discussion dealt with the sources of regulatory unpredictability and policy action needed to redress it in the interest of creating congenial environment for private sector investment.

23 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam participated in a TV program broadcast by News 24. The other participant was Mr. Md. Nasir, Vice-President Meghna Insurance. The discussions dealt with the present state of development of the insurance industry with particular focus on its contribution to GDP, population coverage and product diversity. The challenges facing the industry and policy actions needed to invigorate the industry were also discussed.

25 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam along with Dr. Mizanur Rahman, Professor Dhaka University, Department of Accounting and Business Management appeared in a TV Talk-show broadcast by NTV. The focus of discussions was the implications of recent macroeconomic developments on the capital market of Bangladesh.

25 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam was only discussant in talk-show broadcast by Ekushey TV. Among the issues discussed were the recent performance indicators of macro economy in Bangladesh in terms of exports, remittances, classified loan in the banking system, flow of credit to the private sector, inflation etc. and their implications for near term growth. 

29 October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam delivered a lecture at Bangladesh Institute of Governance and Management (BIGM) of Dhaka University. The topic of the lecture was “Macroeconomic Management in Bangladesh”. The lecture dealt with the achievement of Bangladesh over time as well as in comparison with other countries in terms of growth of GDP, inflation control and poverty alleviation.

31October: Dr. Mirza Azizul Islam was the Chief guest at a seminar on “Contribution of Higher Education in National Development” organized by National Debate Federation (NDF). Dr. Niamat Elahee presently Chairman of International Business Department of Quinnipiac University, USA was the Special guest. The discussions dealt with diverse channels through which higher education can contribute to economic development, challenges to the full realization of the potential benefits of higher education and policy actions needed to deal with them.

Dr. Mirza M. Hassan, Adjunct Fellow; Dr. Shanawez Hossain, Research Fellow; Ms. Syeda Salina Aziz, Senior Research Associate and Ms. Kaneta Zillur, Research Associate of BIGD attended the launching ceremony of Digitising Implementation Monitoring and Public Procurement Project (DIMAPPP), under which BIGD will also be involved as a social accountability consultant. The Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) under the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) of the Ministry of Planning launched the new project at a city hotel on October 25, 2017. The primary objective of the project is to improve the overall management of public procurement in the country. With support from World Bank, the CPTU will implement the project over a period of five years from July 2017 to June 2022.

Finance Minister Mr. AMA Muhith was present at the launching as Chief Guest, while it was chaired by Planning Minister Mr. AHM Mustafa Kamal. World Bank Country Director Mr. Qimiao Fan, and Director, Governance Global practice, Mr. Vinay Sharma, spoke as Special Guests.

BIGD’s ED Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman had several meetings in October 2017 with a number of distinguished personalities such as prominent academics, policy makers and researchers regarding the research collaborations and other relevant issues of BIGD.

Dr. Rahman had meetings with Dr. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Commissioner, Anti Corruption Commission (ACC); Dr. Shah Md. Ahsan Habib, Director (training) Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management; Dr. Syed Mushfeque Rahman, Additional Commissioner (Customs) and Deputy Project Director, VAT Online Project, National Board of Revenue (NBR); Mr. Mohammad Anisur Rahman, Joint Director, Foreign Exchange Operation Department, Bangladesh Bank; and Mr. Golam Sarwar, Assistant Programmer, NBR regarding a project on Money laundering. He also met with Mr. Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, National Governance Assessement Framework - Expert at UNDP; Professor Dr. Syed Saad Andaleeb, Vice Chancellor, BRAC University; Dr. Zeaul Alam, Secretary, Cabinet Division regarding a project collaboration; Mr. Robert Gallagher, Visiting Fellow, regarding research programme on urban, Climate Change and Environment; Dr. Malay Kanti Mridha, Associate Professor, BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health regarding research programmes on Nutrition Governance. Dr. Rahman had also attended a Skype meeting on Developing Public Policy course with Dr. Samar Verma, Senior Programme Specialist, International Development Research Centre (IDRC); Professor Ramkumar Mishra, Director, and Dr. P Geeta, Associate Professor, of Institute of Public Enterprise (IPE); and Mr. Mohan Das Monandhar, Chief Advisor of Nepal Administrative Staff College.

He also attended a meeting with Mr. Vinay Sharma, Director, Governance Global Practice, the World Bank (WB) and Dr. Zafrul Islam, Lead Procurement Specialist and Task Team leader, PPRP-II, WB office regarding BIGD's Role in Dimapp project.

On October 24, 2017, BRAC University Communication and Language Club (BUCLC) has begun its much awaited workshop series on professional skill development for students. The first workshop of the series was on “Corporate Etiquette”. Mr. Abdullah Al Maruf, Assistant General Manager, Human Resources and Organizational Development, Aamra Holdings Limited, conducted the workshop.

The event was held in the auditorium of BRAC University, Mohakhali campus. It was a momentous event for the students, especially for those wanting to enter the corporate world. All the students present had the opportunity to learn and develop professional etiquettes and behaviour. Throughout the workshop students of all levels were exposed to different aspects of professional life. A range of topics was covered by the honourable guest, including behavior, appropriate gestures, relations with colleagues, techniques to face interview, and attire.

At the end, there was an interactive question answer session between the participants and the facilitator. Every student who participated in the event will receive certificates of participation. The club advisors Ms. Farina Haque and Mr. Kushal Das were both present to grace the event and honored the guest speaker with a memento.

Roufa Khanum, Coordinator; Dr. Sajidur Rahman, Assistant Professor and Ms. Sharmin Nahar Nipa, Lecturer of Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) gave their lectures on “Climate Change in Urban”, ‘’Concepts and Applications of Climate Change Tools and Techniques’’ and ‘’Communication with Communities (CwC)’’ on 23 October 2017. They delivered their lectures under the training tilted “Climate Change Adaptation, Mitigation and Resilience’’ organized by Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB). Dr. Rahman mainly focused on the different GIS tools that can be used to manage the disaster events. Moreover, he also showed several examples of how remote sensing can help to analyze changing nature of a particular area before and aftermath of a disaster. On the other hand, Ms. Nipa showed how CwC ensure the communication, dialogue and information sharing between the disasters affected people and responder. She also pointed out the pillars and different stages of communication strategy which need to be considered in the communication strategy formulation. Around, Twenty one participants from different local and national organizations and university fresh graduates attended the lectures.

Anika Saba, Lecturer, ENH, wrote a short book review on the Turkish author Elif Shafak’s The Forty Rules of Love. It was published in the Thumbnail Review section of The Daily Star Literature Page on October 21, 2017. The novel was published by Penguin Books in 2010 and became an international best-seller. It is a mystical book on the relation between poet Rumi and dervish Shams of Tabriz exploring themes of love, religion and Sufism.

Call for BRAC Scholarship Application (Spring-2018)

BRAC Scholarship offers full tuition waiver, living allowance and book allowance (in some cases) to meritorious students who come from disadvantaged financial communities.

Interested BRACU students with CGPA ≥3.00 and obtained a GPA of 4.00 from Science, Arts and Commerce (Without 4th subject) in SSC and HSC or Equivalent and whose monthly family income is not more than Tk. 20,000/- (Taka Twenty Thousand only) may apply for BRAC Scholarship.

The Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) on the event of World Architecture Day 2017 sorted out a seminar on 21 October 2017 in Chittagong at the hall room of Institute of Engineers. IAB welcomed Dr. Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, C3ER, BRAC University as the Keynote Speaker. Professor Nishat conveyed his discourse on Climate Change Action.
